Is there really a difference between men and women skin?

Is there a difference between male and female skin? Yes, there are several and they are the main reason why men do not benefit from skin care products that are formulated for women. Here are just some ways a man’s skin is different from that of a woman:

1.    More and Tougher Facial Hair

Men have more and coarser hair on their face compared to women and it primarily has to do with testosterone, which is predominant in the former. It is the main reason why they have to shave almost on a daily basis. However, freshly shaved skin is hyper sensitive to dryness which in turn can cause inflammation.

That’s because shaving removes the upper layer of skin so naturally, any product or agent that comes in contact with a man’s face post shave penetrates deep. If that product is inorganic or has chemical ingredients, the exposed skin can react adversely. While women have thinner skin, they prefer tweezers or epilation to remove unwanted facial hair which is few and far between, neither of which exposes the skin layer.

2.    Thicker Skin

A man’s skin is 20% to 25% thicker than a woman’s skin and it is also tougher in texture. The excess collagen ensures this and also gives male skin a tight and firm appearance compared to the female skin which is usually soft and supple if it is cared for.

However, what is interesting is that the collagen in a man’s derma reduces constantly over the course of his life while women see a notable change usually post menopause. Since the thinning is gradual in the former compared to the latter, a woman’s appearance may take on drastic changes at that time. This is why some women may look much older than the same men their age if they ignore their skin care routines.

3.    Sebum Production

Men produce more oil on their skin compared to women and they have larger pores in comparison as well. In other words, their skin can look slicker and oiler than a female skin which means they are more prone to acne rather than dry skin unless they shave. That’s because men have higher levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

While sebum production in men remains constant throughout their lives, a woman’s sebum production rate varies as per her ovulation cycle but it also decreases with age.

The good news is that both skin types can benefit from our range of natural and organic products designed specifically for these two skin types like our  Luxurious Hydrating Natural Anti-Ageing Facial Cream by Manbon (for men) and the Organic & Natural - 24HR Sensitive Olive Oil Anti-Ageing Facial Cream from Geoderm. The vital ingredient creates a protective barrier over derma, allowing it to restore its natural defenses. Place your orders today!
